If you’re any kind of techie you’ll know that the Microsoft Zune is a digital player that’s trying something new. First off, it looks a little different. Not a whole lot, but the translucent blue or green soft-touch cover gives a really nice effect. At first blush it looks like an iPod in drag with 2 extra buttons, but it’s soon obvious that the Microsoft Zune has a lot more to offer.
It doesn’t have a clickwheel, but it’s nice to have a dedicated play/pause button. Once you get the hang of it, you can do anything you want on the Microsoft Zune with just your thumb. Another thing the Zune has that nothing else does is a 3″ screen. Unless you want a PSP, this is the biggest screen you’ll see on an MP3 player with video.
So it plays MP3s and it plays videos (very well, I might add), but it also has wireless file-sharing. Before you get too excited, it’s not as wonderful as it sounds. The deal is that you can share MP3s and videos with a friend who also has a Zune, but the files you share can only be listened to 3 times, or kept for 3 days. Hopefully this will be improved as they update the operating software.
The Microsoft Zune Brown 30GB might be chunkier than the comparative iPod, but the competition ends there. For the same capacity you get the same battery life, but the iPod’s screen is 1″ smaller, and the iPod’s price is nearly 5 times higher than the Zune on Special at Buy.com (iPod 30gb Video $490.58 on Amazon)
If you hurry up and order yours before the middle of November, you can get the Microsoft Zune 30gb (Brown) for only $99 from Buy.com.

[...] screen isn’t really anything to shout about – the new iPod videos have this, and the Microsoft Zune has an even bigger screen at almost the same price. The thing is, with those gadgets they have a lot of other stuff that they [...]

It looks like a genuine potential contender to the iPod, and I have no doubt the sound quality will be bett, but until it offers 120GB plus I would still choose the iPod.
